Landscape-Scale Genetic Structure of Wild Rice Zizania latifolia: The Roles of Rivers, Mountains and Fragmentation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wild rice (Zizania latifolia) is an important genetic resource and it has important ecological functions in aquatic ecosystems as well. Here, we used landscape genetics to investigate how the landscape features, including rivers, mountains and habitat fragmentation, affect the genetic connectivity or create dispersal barriers for Z. latifolia. In this report, seventeen populations from the Sanjiang Plain and its surrounding areas were genotyped by ten microsatellite markers. A high genetic differentiation and genetic discontinuity were found among populations within each river investigated, suggesting that the rivers be not acting as corridors for dispersal. Meanwhile, genetic discontinuity was detected from different sides of the Lesser Khingan and its branch, the Qinghei Mountains, demonstrating that gene flow was blocked by the complex topography of mountains. The results that historical gene flow was much higher than the contemporary gene flow might infer that recent habitat fragmentation resulted in decreased gene flow. For all sampled Z. latifolia populations, the result of low level of genetic variation (na = 2.3, HE = 0.328) and high genetic divergence (FST = 0.405, Dest = 0.414 and Øpt = 0.424) was consistent with the decreased gene flow, an inbreeding system and repeated genetic bottlenecks. A conservation strategy for protecting as many populations as possible to maximize genomic representation of the species is proposed. In addition, dredging the watercourses should be carried out to improve habitat stability and to facilitate connectivity among populations.

Extensive Microsatellite Variation in Rice Induced by Introgression from Wild Rice (Zizania latifolia Griseb.)
BACKGROUND It is widely accepted that interspecific hybridization may induce genomic instability in the resultant hybrids. However, few studies have been performed on the genomic analysis of homoploid hybrids and introgression lines. We have reported previously that by introgressive hybridization, a set of introgression lines between rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wild rice (Zizania latifolia Grise...
متن کاملFemales Shape the Genetic Structure of a Gorilla Population
Dispersal, one of the key life-history features of a species, influences gene flow and, consequently, the genetic structuring of populations. Landscape characteristics such as rivers, mountains, or habitat fragmentation affect dispersal and result in broad-scale genetic structuring of various mammalian species [1-5]. However, less attention has been paid to studying how dispersal is influenced ...
متن کاملA host plant genome (Zizania latifolia) after a century-long endophyte infection.
Despite the importance of host-microbe interactions in natural ecosystems, agriculture and medicine, the impact of long-term (especially decades or longer) microbial colonization on the dynamics of host genomes is not well understood. The vegetable crop 'Jiaobai' with enlarged edible stems was domesticated from wild Zizania latifolia (Oryzeae) approximately 2000 years ago as a result of persist...
متن کاملRetrotransposon activation followed by rapid repression in introgressed rice plants.
Plant retrotransposons are largely inactive during normal development, but may be activated by stresses. Both copia-like and gypsy-like retrotransposons of rice were activated by introgression of DNA from the wild species Zizania latifolia Griseb. The copy number increase was associated with cytosine methylation changes of the elements. Activity of the elements was ephemeral, as evidenced by ne...
